For more than half a century, a towering modernist fountain has stood on the campus of Lund University’s Faculty of Engineering in southern Sweden. Designed by architect Klas Anshelm and sculptor Arne Jones – and once gleaming with water and thick panes of glass – it has been left dry and dilapidated for most of its life. The Fountain: A Biography is a tale of love, loathing, longing and collective imagination. Part history, part detective story, part meditation on decline and disappearance, it suggests we fail the things we build, rather than their failing us.

The book is a result of a research project led by Maddie Leach from 2021 to 2026, titled The Fountain: An art-technological-social drama. The project received funding from FORMAS (a Swedish government research council for sustainable development) and initiated a partnership between HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg, Lund University’s Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and Skissernas Museum.
